<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What Knife is in Your Fur Shed?</strong></h2>

<p class="has-text-align-right has-small-font-size">Story and Photos by <a href="https://www.knife-gear.com/the-team/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jason Houser</a></p>

<p class="story-first-letter">Read anything in a magazine, on social media or on a forum that has to do with trapping or predator hunting and the topics will often be about fur prices, the best trap to hold a particular animal, what set works best to catch a beaver when the water is frozen or which caliber of rifle is best to drop a coyote in its tracks at 200 yards with a 5-mile per hour crosswind.</p>

<p>OK, maybe not these exact topics, but you understand where I’m going with this.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Next Step</strong></h3>

<p>These are all good topics, but they often become old news, and frankly everybody has their favorite set, trap and rifle round to get the job done. Besides, getting the animal is only half the work, maybe not even that much. The real work begins in the fur shed when the animal is still warm to the touch.</p>

<p>Now that your coyote, coon, mink—or any other furbearer for that matter—is hanging in the fur shed, most trappers and hunters already know how to skin, flesh, stretch and dry the pelt. But what are you going to use to get the hide off the animal and get the most value for your hard work?</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-07.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5400" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-07.jpg 1200w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-07-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-07-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-07-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-07-90x60.jpg 90w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-07-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-07-95x64.jpg 95w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption>Having the right knife in the fur shed makes things a lot easier when it comes to skinning animals, and in the long run will help provide a quality pelt that will be more money from the buyer.</figcaption></figure>

<p>It all starts with a quality knife that will hold its edge. The last thing you want to do is keep having to sharpen your knife; especially if you have a lot of fur that needs your attention.</p>

<p>To have a knife that will hold its edge for any length of time begins with a blade made from quality steel. If you have ever heard, “You get what you pay for,” nothing could be closer to the truth when it comes to knives.</p>

<p>If you try to save a buck or two on a second-rate knife, you will be stomping the floor in disgust more than you are skinning. It is best to purchase one quality knife that will last for several seasons—maybe even a lifetime—than have to purchase multiple knives over the course of your skinning career.</p>

<p>In the long run, you will save money.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Selecting the Right Knife</strong></h3>

<p>So, what makes a quality blade?</p>

<p>The type of steel used in the blade ultimately dictates how the knife will perform. When a blade is made, different types of steel are achieved by the different types of additive elements, along with how the blade is rolled and heated—also known as the finishing process.</p>

<div class="wp-block-group div-padding has-white-background-color has-background"><div class="wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow">
<p><strong>There are five things to look for in a knife:</strong></p>

<ol type="1"><li>Hardness</li><li>Toughness</li><li>Wear resistance</li><li>Corrosion resistance</li><li>Edge retention.</li></ol>
</div></div>

<p>All of these things are good in a knife but unfortunately you can’t have them all in the same knife. You need to know what your knife will be used for and then purchase one that has the metal components that fit your needs.</p>

<p>As a trapper and predator hunter in the fur shed, you will need a knife that will hold its edge, over a knife that is known for its hardness and its ability to not lose form when subjected to stress and applied force.</p>

<p>An example is the Spyderco knife I use at times on some of the tougher animals, like coyotes. The metal used in the blade is called CPM-S30V. CPM-S30V contains 1.45% Carbon, 14.00% Chromium, 4.00% Vanadium and 2.00% Molybdenum. Once all the ingredients are mixed and fused together, the outcome is a strong knife blade that will hold its edge.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-06.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5399" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-06.jpg 1200w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-06-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-06-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-06-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-06-90x60.jpg 90w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-06-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-06-95x64.jpg 95w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption>Most knives have the blade material stamped at the ricasso on the blade.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Most blades will have their metal material codes stamped into the blade, normally at the ricasso. It is a simple task to google the metal material to see what its strengths and weaknesses are. Or you can visit our <a href="https://www.knife-gear.com/steel-types/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">steel guide in the resources section</a> of this site.</p>

<p>Seldom can you find a knife that will hold its edge and be easy to sharpen when needed.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Folder vs. Fixed</strong></h3>

<p>Is a folding knife better than a fixed-blade knife? There are several pros to each knife.</p>

<div class="wp-block-envira-envira-gallery"><div class="envira-gallery-feed-output"><img class="envira-gallery-feed-image" tabindex="0" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-02-1024x683.jpg" title="KG-0421-TRAPPING-02" alt="" /></div></div>

<p>The fixed-blade knife is often known for being tough. This is great if you need a knife while hunting or trapping and happen to have one on your hip. Because there are no moving parts, they are hard to break and cleaning is a breeze.</p>

<p>Folding knives are usually smaller with slimmer blades, which makes it easier to work around the face and other delicate parts of the critter you are skinning. And, because they can fold, they are approximately half the size of a fixed-blade knife.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-05.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5398" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-05.jpg 1200w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-05-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-05-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-05-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-05-90x60.jpg 90w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-05-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-05-95x64.jpg 95w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption>Folding knives often have a slimmer blade which makes it easy to make the fine cuts that will be required on smaller animals like this muskrat.</figcaption></figure>

<p>I use both folding and fixed blade knives when skinning, for different purposes. When I’m working on a bigger, tougher critter like a coyote I start with a fixed blade that has a gut-hook. The blade’s design makes for easy work on these bigger animals and I can use the gut hook to make a clean cut from ankle to ankle.</p>

<p>When I get down to the ears and face, I switch to a knife with a slimmer blade. This allows me to perform the delicate work on the face without making any unnecessary holes that I would have to repair later.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Other Options</strong></h3>

<p>Besides the traditional knives that many are accustomed to, scalpel knives are liked by many outdoorsmen. The blades are replaceable, which means you never have to re-sharpen. Simply pull out the old blade and replace with a new one.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-01.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5394" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-01.jpg 1200w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-01-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-01-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-01-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-01-90x60.jpg 90w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-01-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-01-95x64.jpg 95w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption>The Razor-Lite knife from Outdoor Edge offers scalpel sharp replacement blades.</figcaption></figure>

<p>I have used several brands of such knives over the last few years, and the one I keep going back to is the Razor-Lite from Outdoor Edge. Unlike some knives with replaceable blades that can be tough, even dangerous to remove, this knife is easy to handle. With the push of a button, the old blade comes out and the new one can be locked into place. And the 3.5-inch scalpel sharp blades are some of the toughest I have used.</p>

<p>Taxidermists have been using surgeon’s scalpels for years for the fine detail work involved with their craft. Trappers and predator hunters are just now beginning to realize their value in the fur shed.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-03.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5396" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-03.jpg 1200w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-03-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-03-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-03-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-03-90x60.jpg 90w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-03-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-03-95x64.jpg 95w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption>Fillet knives have both the strength to work on tough animals, and a small flexible tip to work well around the face of an animal.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Many trappers choose to use a small fillet knife in the fur shed. This style of knife has the strength to work on the biggest of animals but, with their small tips, work well from the neck up. I have witnessed many trappers use fillet knives, but I have yet to try it for myself.</p>

<p>From what I have seen they do a good job.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Personal Preference</strong></h3>

<p>The choice is really up to each person, and their individual wants and needs. Look over all possibilities and choose the one that best suits you.</p>

<p>Whether you want a fixed-blade, folding knife, scalpel, or a combination of the three, there is a knife out there for you. I have used dozens of different knives over the years, and the ones mentioned in this article are what work best for me.</p>

<p>Through trial and error, you might find a knife—or knives—better suited to your taste. <span class="bug">K&amp;G</span></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-ENDCAP.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5401" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-ENDCAP.jpg 1200w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-ENDCAP-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-ENDCAP-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-ENDCAP-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-ENDCAP-90x60.jpg 90w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-ENDCAP-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/KG-0421-TRAPPING-ENDCAP-95x64.jpg 95w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption>Having a variety of knives is important depending on the animal and the cut.</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Proper Water Purification </strong>is Essential for a Successful Survival Plan</h2>

<p class="has-text-align-right has-small-font-size">Story by <a href="https://www.knife-gear.com/the-team/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jason Houser</a>, Photos by Jason Houser and <a href="https://www.12survivors.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">12 Survivors</a></p>

<p class="story-first-letter">Many people take fresh water for granted. We can simply go to the faucet, turn the water on and clean water is dispensed and ready for human consumption. But what if you did not have fresh, clean water to drink? Would you be able to survive?</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">&#8220;Even the best laid plans can go south in a hurry.&#8221;</h4>

<p>The ability to have clean water to drink in a survival situation is mandatory.&nbsp;A person can only live for about three days without water – which all depends on the amount of activity a person is doing, as well as the ambient temperature. A person that is more active and not properly nourished would succumb quicker.</p>

<p>Even the best laid plans can go south in a hurry. Whether you are hunting deep in the mountains, taking a stroll through the woods, camping or just about any other outdoor activity, away from civilization, problems can arise.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Water Collection</strong></h3>

<p>Much of the globe has abundant water sources, unless the region is experiencing a drought. Ponds, rivers, lakes, and streams are all good sources of water. However, it is best to get water from a moving water source.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Also, do not wait until you are thirsty to find water, by then it might be too late. If you know you are going to need water soon, it is best to make it a priority to find the water and prepare it for safe consumption.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For this article, let’s assume you know where a water source is and concentrate on making it safe to drink.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Purification</strong></h3>

<p>One of the oldest, and maybe most reliable, ways to kill parasites, bacteria and other pathogens in water is to boil it. This can be done over a campfire or stove in a metal, ceramic or glass container. A rolling boil for 5 minutes will kill most dangerous organisms, but 10 minutes is ideal to ensure that nothing survives.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="616" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-11-1024x616.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2788" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-11-1024x616.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-11-300x181.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-11-768x462.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-11.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Boiling is the surest way to purify water. A 10 minute roiling boil will kill everything.</figcaption></figure>

<p>But, let’s face it, if you are in a survival situation, you might not have the means to boil water. That is where having other methods to filter and purify water comes into play.</p>

<p>Dioxide/Sodium Chloride tablets, like those manufactured by Potable Aqua®, are widely used and trusted to be effective towards bacteria, viruses, and cysts.</p>

<p>These tablets are easy to use, with the only drawback being the wait. To use, simply remove a tablet from its foil packaging, with knife or scissors, and quickly insert into 1 quart &#8211; 1 liter of contaminated water. Allow it to react for 4 hours, in an area away from sunlight, before drinking.</p>

<div class="wp-block-envira-envira-gallery"><div class="envira-gallery-feed-output"><img class="envira-gallery-feed-image" tabindex="0" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-06-768x1024.jpg" title="KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-06" alt="" /></div></div>

<p>Keep in mind that these types of tablets have a shelf life, which is marked on the package. The tablets from Potable Aqua expire 4 years after they are manufactured.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Pocket Purifier</strong></h3>

<p>Other options are small, portable water purifiers, that can fit in your pack or even your pocket. There are several on the market that I am sure are great but, for this article, we tested a couple from 12 Survivors.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-01-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2789" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-01-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-01-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-01-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-01-90x60.jpg 90w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-01-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-01-95x64.jpg 95w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-01.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>This simple to use purifier simply fits on to any standard water or soda bottle.</figcaption></figure>

<p>The first one we tested was the small Pocket Water Purifier. This simple to use purifier simply fits on to any standard water or soda bottle. If you don’t have a bottle, all you have to do is place the end of the filter into the water source and begin to drink. For dirty water, you can attach a prefilter – that is included – to the end of the straw before use.</p>

<p>This particular filter has been tested by TUV SUD (a company that provides inspection and certification services) to reduce 99.9999% of bacteria and to help prevent illnesses such as Salmonella, Giardia, Cholera, Diarrhea, and others.</p>

<div class="wp-block-envira-envira-gallery"><div class="envira-gallery-feed-output"><img class="envira-gallery-feed-image" tabindex="0" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-03-768x1024.jpg" title="KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-03" alt="" /></div></div>

<p>Weighing in at 2.1 ounces, this small – but effective – filter has an output flow rate of 0.4 Liters per minute, with a filter capacity of 1500 Liters (396 gallons).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Hand Pump Water Purifier</strong></h3>

<p>The big brother to the Pocket Water Purifier is the Hand Pump Water Purifier.</p>

<p>This particular purifier allows you to pump water into the unit, which will filter out bacteria and cysts, and then the water is pumped into another container for use.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-09-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2798" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-09-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-09-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-09.jpg 900w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>A collapsible water bottle is a good thing to have when away. Photo: <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.12survivors.com" target="_blank">12 Survivors</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>This purifier is a little bigger but still only weighs 12.8 ounces. It is capable of filtering 22 gallons of water through the ceramic filter and 1,320 gallons through the carbon filter, at a speed of .5 liters per minute. This pump has the same 99.9999% capabilities at eliminating bacteria as the smaller Pocket Water Purifier. Also, this pump can filter down to 0.1 microns, through the ceramic filter.</p>

<p>Both of these filters are built to withstand the outdoor lifestyle and are easily portable. I personally used both of these filters on some questionable water sources and had no issues at all.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Natural Means</strong></h3>

<p>If you find yourself without tablets or a portable purifier, mother nature can help – via&nbsp;the sun’s UV rays.</p>

<p>To begin, make sure the water you are using is free of contaminants such as dirt, mud, or debris. If needed, filter the water by pouring it through several layers of cloth to catch as much sediment and debris as possible. UV rays will not be able to penetrate cloudy water, so make sure it is as clear as possible.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-07-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2800" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-07-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-07-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-07-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-07-90x60.jpg 90w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-07-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-07-95x64.jpg 95w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-07.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>The sun’s UV rays work well if you have the time to wait.</figcaption></figure>

<p>It is best to use clean, clear bottles – such as water or soda bottles. Tinted bottles will block too much of the UV rays.</p>

<p>Fill the bottles 2/3 full of water and shake for 20 -30 seconds. This will saturate the water with oxygen, which will help to kill the germs. Then, finish filling the bottles to the brim with water and lay them down in the sun – do not stand them up. Laying them down allows the UV rays to penetrate to maximum depth. If possible, lay the bottles on a reflective surface to optimize the UV exposure.</p>

<p>If the sky is mostly sunny, with only a few clouds, then 6 hours of sunlight will be enough. However, if the sky is more than 50% cloudy, then it will take 2 days to purify the water. The ambient air temperature is not a factor, it is the strength of the UV sunlight that is significant. If you are not sure how long to wait, it is always better to wait longer than needed, than to rush the process.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="623" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-13-1024x623.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2801" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-13-1024x623.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-13-300x183.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-13-768x467.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-13.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>A good collapsible water bottle is perfect for water storage. Photo: <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.12survivors.com" target="_blank">12 Survivors</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>My advice is to purchase a collapsible water bottle for storing water. Many companies sell collapsible water bottles for this purpose, including 12 Survivors. They can easily be folded and stowed away until needed.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Prepare for the Worst and Hope for the Best</strong></h3>

<p>Fifty to seventy-five percent of our bodies are made up of water and seventy percent of our planet is covered in it. It would be very hard to overstate the importance of water in our daily lives.</p>

<p>Although the rule of threes states that we can go three days without water, it doesn’t mean that we can go strong for three days without water. Dehydration, and its negative effects, can begin to set in within the first day. In any survival situation water should be one of your immediate first priorities.</p>

<p>Hopefully, you never find yourself in a situation where your life depends on having a way to purify water, but it is always better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. <span class="bug">K&amp;G</span></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-12-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2782" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-12-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-12-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/KG-0420-WATER-PURIFICATION-12.jpg 900w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /><figcaption>Water not only brings life giving sustenance, it can also bring life taking illness –&nbsp;if not properly treated.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="story-first-letter">The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines clandestine as “marked by, held in, or conducted with secrecy”. This can apply to a lot of different things, but for the sake of this article we are going to stick with blades and survival.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">&#8220;The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines clandestine as “marked by, held in, or conducted with secrecy”.&#8221;</h4>

<p>A lot of companies have come out with clandestine Everyday Carry (EDC) items in recent years – whether it is hidden knives, cache belts, and even handcuff keys. This has much to do with always being prepared for any circumstance that might arise. Times are changing and we need to change with them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Let’s take a look at some EDC items that you should consider carrying.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Wazoo Cache Belt</strong></h3>

<p>If you do a lot of traveling and are concerned with being mugged or having your wallet or purse stolen, you might consider wearing a cache belt. Cache belts are designed to discretely carry your money, important papers, etc.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="711" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-10.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2136" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-10.jpg 1000w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-10-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-10-768x546.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>The Cache Belt will fit 23 items you never thought possible. Photo: <a href="https://wazoosurvivalgear.com/products/cache-belt?_pos=3&amp;_sid=f85fc630e&amp;_ss=r" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Wazoo Survival Gear (opens in a new tab)">Wazoo Survival Gear</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>Many belts that are designed to conceal your valuables have zippered compartments. However, the Wazoo Cache belt is different, in that it offers a&nbsp;1&#215;26 inch Velcro pouch, that runs most of the length of the belt. The bottom of the inside piece of Velcro is loose, so you can lay it over your items making them easier to retrieve, while also protecting them from other items.</p>

<p><strong>Ultimate Survival Belt</strong></p>

<p>It sounds great having your valuables protected, but that is only a very small part of what the Wazoo Cache Belt can do. This belt can be turned into the ultimate survival belt, with the Wazoo Adventure Kit that is comprised of 23 survival tools.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="787" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-11.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2139" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-11.jpg 1000w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-11-300x236.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-11-768x604.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-11-45x35.jpg 45w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>Wazoo Survival Gear provides two different levels of survival kit for your Cache Belt, or even Cache Cap. <p>The Wazoo Adventure Kit includes: safety pins, fire plug tinder, ceramic knife, needle, fire steel, compass, fishing hooks, water container, signal mirror, split shot weights, purification tablets, brass wire, fishing line, ranger bands, trail markers, water pre filter, zip ties, whistle, cordage, aluminum foil, duct tape, flashlight and wire saw.</p>

<div class="wp-block-envira-envira-gallery"><div class="envira-gallery-feed-output"><img class="envira-gallery-feed-image" tabindex="0" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-15.jpg" title="KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-15" alt="" /></div></div>

<p>The interesting thing about this adventure kit, is that everything will fit in the cache belt. Will you need everything in your belt? Probably not, but it is there if you do, or you can only place the items you choose.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Wazoo Cache Cap</strong></h3>

<p>Another cool item from Wazoo, that serves to conceal your EDC kit, is the cache cap. Most of us probably have enough caps to go around, but I doubt many are like this one.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="828" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-12.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2138" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-12.jpg 1000w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-12-300x248.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-12-768x636.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>Not your ordinary ball cap, the&nbsp;Cache Cap from Wazoo has room to fit many survival items&nbsp;and could save your life. Photo: <a href="https://wazoosurvivalgear.com/products/patch-cache-cap?_pos=1&amp;_sid=ed244af6d&amp;_ss=r" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Wazoo Survival Gear (opens in a new tab)">Wazoo Survival Gear</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>This cap has six hidden pockets, including 3 in the main dome of the hat, 1 hook and loop closure located in the middle of the brim, and 2 narrow slot pockets – also on the brim. These allow you to store a multitude of items in your cap.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-envira-envira-gallery"><div class="envira-gallery-feed-output"><img class="envira-gallery-feed-image" tabindex="0" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-07-1.jpg" title="KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-07" alt="" /></div></div>

<p>Both of the cache kits from Wazoo will also work with these hats.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Wazoo Handcuff Key</strong></h3>

<p>Do you have a need to conceal a handcuff key?&nbsp;</p>

<p>It wasn’t all that long ago the answer would have been no. But the world we live in now is nothing like it was a few years ago. I don’t know if people are crazier now than in the past, but you never know what they are capable of. So, if you find yourself detained (not by the police), a handcuff key might save your life.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="526" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-05.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2120" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-05.jpg 1000w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-05-300x158.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-05-768x404.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>The size of a penny, the handcuff key from Wazoo can be discreetly carried in many places. Photo: <a href="https://wazoosurvivalgear.com/products/handcuff-key?_pos=1&amp;_sid=480363917&amp;_ss=r" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Wazoo Survival Gear (opens in a new tab)">Wazoo Survival Gear</a></figcaption></figure>

<p>There are several companies offering EDC handcuff keys, that can easily be concealed to gain freedom if you find yourself in a hostage situation, victim of a home invasion or other unforeseen scenarios. Small handcuff keys can be sewn into clothing, attached to the inside of belts, strapped to the back of watches and many other hidden locations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I have to go back to Wazoo for a cuff key spotlight.&nbsp;Their handcuff key isn’t much bigger than a penny and is a fully functioning, universal handcuff key with functioning double locking pin. Made of&nbsp;hard polymer it is completely non-metallic – so it is silent when being used. Keys come with an adhesive backing, so they are easily applied to the back of a watch, bracelet, ID badge, or most any other flat surface. You can also use a&nbsp;Ranger Band<strong>&nbsp;</strong>to attach it to any watch band or bracelet for easy access.&nbsp;</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">&#8220;Keys come with an adhesive backing, so they are easily applied to the back of a watch, bracelet, ID badge, or most any other flat surface.&#8221;</h4>

<p><em>Owning handcuff keys is legal in most states, but they are not intended for escape from law enforcement.</em></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Outdoor Edge ParaClaw</strong></h3>

<p>It is important to have a knife you can quickly get to in a self-defense situation.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-06-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2121" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-06-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-06-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-06-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-06.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>The ParaClaw bracelet conceal a 1.5-inch knife that can be used in numerous situations.</figcaption></figure>

<div style="margin-top: 25px;">
<div style="width: 70%; float: left;">
<p>Even though a lot of us carry a pocketknife, such a knife might not be readily accessible in an attack. Outdoor Edge has a couple solutions that will allow you to have a concealed knife within easy reach, under just about every circumstance.</p>
<p>The first is the Para-Claw<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />, available in three sizes to fit almost everyone. This survival bracelet/knife features a 1.5-inch hawkbill blade, ground from 8Cr13MoV stainless steel, with a stealthy BlackStone<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> finish. The blade is integrally molded to a glass/nylon guard that ties into the bracelet. Handle grooves and jimping on the thumb ramp ensure a positive grip at all times. The patent pending sheath system locks the knife securely, for immediate deployment in any situation.</p>
</div>
<div style="width: 30%; float: right;" align="right">
<iframe style="width:120px;height:240px;" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ac&amp;ref=qf_sp_asin_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=kgsociety-20&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=B01N15RMQ5&amp;asins=B01N15RMQ5&amp;linkId=a82bd4ecd1df421f75aa1009d2136b09&amp;show_border=false&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=true&amp;price_color=333333&amp;title_color=0066c0&amp;bg_color=ffffff">

<p>Once deployed, the paracord bracelet forms the knife handle. Each bracelet is hand-tied from paracord and is available in three sizes and colors – each with an adjustable loop to fine tune the fit, plus a steel T-post for easy attachment.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Outdoor Edge ParaClaw CQD Watch</strong></h3>

<p>The second option from Outdoor Edge is the ParaClaw CQD Watch. This watch/knife combo is very similar to the bracelet but as the name implies, it appears to be merely a watch – nobody needs to know there is a knife concealed within the strap.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-03-1024x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2122" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-03-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-03-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-03-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-03-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/KG-0120-CLANDESTINEEDC-03.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>The CQD watch from Outdoor Edge is more than just a timepiece.</figcaption></figure>

<div style="margin-top: 25px;">
<div style="width: 55%; float: left; margin-right: 15px;">
<p>Featuring precision craftsmanship, the ParaClaw CQD Watch is constructed of reliable Japanese quarts movement and is housed in a water-resistant case. The paracord wristband is fitted with the ParaClaw buckle – complete with 1.5-inch stainless steel hawkbill blade. Much like its younger brother – the ParaClaw bracelet – the ParaClaw CQD Watch is designed for discrete carry and quick access in dire situations. It is available in either 316L stainless steel or zinc alloy.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Many Varying Options</strong></h3>

<p>The days of just carrying a pocketknife as your Every Day Carry are gone. In today’s market there are so many varying options available when EDC is involved. If you are the type that takes your and your family’s safety seriously, spend some time and look at your choices. It doesn’t have to be big, or overly robust, but the right kit will have you always prepared for the worst-case scenario.&nbsp;</p>

This is especially true for hunters targeting hogs, coyotes, and other predators they hunt at night. But thermal scopes can serve a dual purpose and be used to hunt during the daylight hours too.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Differences</strong></h3>

<p>What is the difference between a thermal rifle scope/handheld and night vision?&nbsp;</p>

<p>Night vision works by reflected light. For traditional night vision, that is light in the visible spectrum – like from the moon or even stars on very sensitive models.&nbsp;Digital night vision&nbsp;is closer to thermal,&nbsp;as it uses IR light – but it still needs an IR projector. It&nbsp;picks up the Infrared light that is reflected off a target,&nbsp;not what is emanating from it.&nbsp; For this reason, night vision is more properly called light-amplification technology.&nbsp;</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">“…thermal vision uses radiation that is emitted from the target.”</h4>

<p>However, thermal vision uses radiation that is emitted from the target. It doesn’t need any light source to see and can see in complete darkness or the&nbsp;noonday&nbsp;sun.&nbsp; This is not something that either forms of light-amplification technology can do.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-envira-envira-gallery"><div class="envira-gallery-feed-output"><img class="envira-gallery-feed-image" tabindex="0" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-11-1024x576.jpg" title="KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-11" alt="" /></div></div>

<p>The thing that hunters must keep in mind though, is that these cameras only work if you have a line of sight to the object you want to see. If there is just a small tree separating you from what you want to look at, you will not see it. But, being able to locate something might be as simple as moving a couple feet in either direction, and scanning the area again.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Purchase Considerations</strong></h3>

<p>If you are just beginning to think about purchasing a thermal or night vision scope or handheld, the biggest factor for many of us, is price. Even the cheap ones are not cheap. Units can run anywhere from a few hundred dollars, to several thousand dollars, depending on what you are looking for.</p>

<p>When choosing a scope or handheld – that should last for years – let’s look at some important features to consider, before your purchase. Range, magnification, picture clarity, video recording, housing construction, warranty, Wi-Fi compatible and battery life are just some of the things you need to think about before making a purchase.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">“Range, magnification, picture clarity, video recording, housing construction, warranty, Wi-Fi compatible and battery life are just some of the things you need to think about before making a purchase.”</h4>

<p>Let’s take a look at a few of the features in more detail.</p>

<p><strong>Range</strong></p>

<p>Unlike traditional night vision scopes, the range on thermal is pushing more than 2000 yards, on some of the best units. This is hardly necessary for most hunters, so consider the ranges you hunt and get a magnification that works. Most scopes top out around 15x with lower priced scopes at 5x or less.  </p>

<p><strong>Sensor Resolution</strong></p>

<p>Even more important than the magnification is the sensor resolution. You are not going to get a lot of megapixels with thermals, but that is not a big deal. A quality thermal will allow you to make out the animal well enough for good shot placement.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>To get good shot placement, you need to be able to distinguish between the parts of an animal and you are going to need&nbsp;decent&nbsp;resolution to do that.&nbsp; For best results you will need a scope with 640&#215;480 resolution.&nbsp; If it gets below a 320&#215;240 you will not get the results you want, and it will leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. A picture in picture view through your riflescope will help you easily acquire your target.</p>

<p><strong>Thermal Detector Sensitivity</strong></p>

<p>The sensitivity of the thermal detector will determine how far away it can pick up thermal radiation. You want something farther than you plan to hunt, so you can watch the animal approach.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The sensitivity of the thermal detector will determine how far away it can pick up thermal radiation.</h4>

<p>Some rifle scopes&nbsp;will have ranges up to 2000 yards while others are stuck at distances of about 350 yards. As with most things, your needs will determine your purchase.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Like most hunters, I don’t shoot long distances at night. But I use the <a href="http://www.pulsarnv.com/sku=PL76519" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Trail LRF XP50 (opens in a new tab)">Trail LRF XP50</a>, from Pulsar, that allows me to see close to 2,000 yards. This is great, coupled with my <a href="http://www.pulsarnv.com/sku=PL77422" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Axion XM38 (opens in a new tab)">Axion XM38</a>, which I use to scan the area for game. Once the animal is located, the rifle can be shouldered, and the animal can then be viewed in the riflescope until it is time to shoot.</p>

<div class="wp-block-envira-envira-gallery"><div class="envira-gallery-feed-output"><img class="envira-gallery-feed-image" tabindex="0" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-09.jpg" title="KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-09" alt="" /></div></div>

<p><strong>Battery Life</strong></p>

<p>Battery life is a big factor. If you are going to be out hunting all night you want a battery that will last. While most batteries are rechargeable, they will last anywhere from 4 to 16 hours. A battery with a 16-hour lifespan will get you through the night, whereas a 4-hour battery might not do the trick. In this case, it is good to have a spare battery to throw in your riflescope, or handheld, when the power starts to drain.</p>

<p><strong>App Enhancement</strong></p>

<p>Some companies, like Pulsar, have mobile apps (Stream Vision for Pulsar) that are compatible with their scopes and handhelds – virtually turning your smartphone or tablet into a mobile viewfinder. Photo and video recording can be initiated from your device and files can even be saved directly to your phone or tablet.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-12-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1645" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-12-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-12-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-12-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-12.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>The Stream Vision App from Pulsar allows you to control a lot of the optic’s settings from your phone.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Other benefits of the Stream Vision app allow you to adjust the settings of thermal unit, use it as a motion detector (which signals the hunters of activity) and even provides a ballistic match technology. This greatly decreases sight in time, by calculating bullet drop based on your caliber and load.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Benefits of a Handheld Scanner</strong></h3>

<p>Something I am asked a lot is, why do you need a handheld scanner if you already have a scope doing the same thing?</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-10-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1644" srcset="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-10-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-10-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-10-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-10-90x60.jpg 90w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-10-180x120.jpg 180w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-10-95x64.jpg 95w, https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-10.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>A small, lightweight handheld is easy to hold as you scan for game.</figcaption></figure>

<p>While using a good thermal handheld, you will be detecting wildlife at a very long range. Unless you are comfortable keeping your rifle shouldered and continuously looking through the scope, you will never know the animals are there. Locating more animals at long distance is what this thermal optic is designed to do. After you locate your prey, you will either be calling predators closer, or stalking in closer to hogs for a good shot.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Versatile Utility</strong></h3>

<p>So, what are the practical purposes for such a camera? I not only get this very question from my wife, but even from the folks I spend a lot of time with outdoors. However, after seeing the camera in action, they quickly see the practical purposes behind it.</p>

<p>Entering and exiting stand locations in the dark is a good way to ruin a hunting spot.&nbsp;&nbsp; With a thermal camera it is easy to spot game from a distance, and change your route as needed, to avoid bumping deer and other game animals that you might get a shot at later on.</p>

<div class="wp-block-envira-envira-gallery"><div class="envira-gallery-feed-output"><img class="envira-gallery-feed-image" tabindex="0" src="https://www.knife-gear.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-16.jpg" title="KG-1219-NIGHTVISION-16" alt="" /></div></div>

<p>I mainly use my camera when entering/exiting a stand location and for animal recovery. But the other possibilities include camping, trapping and hunting in areas of the country where dangerous game roam (best to see them before they see you), wild hog hunting, checking traps in the dark, predator hunting, home security, and search and rescue at land and on the water.</p>

<p>The list of viable uses for one of these cameras is long. Finding missing people in the dark, spotting dangerous game before they spot you, scouting, recovery, checking traps, watching wildlife, and so much more. If you haven’t tried a thermal camera yet, I recommend you do so. You don’t have to jump in feet first if you don’t want to. There are models on the market for all budgets.  Find one that is right for you and give it a try.</p>
