For many knife enthusiasts it can be trying at times to find the angle of your edge grind.
Finding the proper angle of the secondary grind on your knife can be important for a couple of different reasons. First, when using a sharpening system, it is good to know the angle of your edge if you just want to maintain the factory bevel (less important if you plan to reprofile your edge). Two, the angle of your edge’s grind can help to determine your knife’s intended use (hard core users will have a more robust edge, where knives meant for light work and fine slicing will have a much finer/keener edge).
There are different ways that you can use to determine the angle of your edge, but they can be a bit daunting and tend to have some work involved. Basically, you can’t just pick your knife up, give it a quick look and know. Although, if you have been doing it for a long time, you can probably get pretty close in your approximation, but it is still just that, an approximation.
With the Audacious Concept Dog Tag Tool, you can now bring an edge anglefinder with you wherever you go. I keep mine right on my keychain. It is as simple as placing your knife’s edge into the different notches on the edge of the Dog Tag Tool and finding the notch that the edge fits snugly into, flush on both sides. It is that simple.
The one thing that I do find to be a little hard is that the numbers aren’t colored very brightly and can be a bit hard to see without really good lighting. But they are etched into the tool, so you don’t have to worry about them wearing off.
I would like to add the disclaimer/warning to be very careful when using the Dog Tag Tool as an edge angle guide. Do not bring it too closely to your eye when finding the correct notch. While you are looking at the guide the tip might be closer to your eye than you think. Whenever possible, I point the tip away from me and look from behind. I have found this to be the safest method of using the Dog Tag Tool.
